At MiniMUN, we believe it is immensely crucial to learn and talk about current events, but sometimes all the bad news is too discouraging. Though bad news serves as a wake-up call, it is equally important to uncover information that gives us hope too. In some of these blogs, we hope to do just that. In addition to news about MiniMUN and recent issues, exciting updates about SDG-related topics will also be provided. Here's our first update on SDG5, which is gender equality in education.
As you can imagine, gender-based discrimination has historically been rampant in learning environments and educational institutions. In the 1900s, only around 85,000 college students in the United States were female. Since then, women have fought greatly for their rights, and some even devoted their entire lives to this cause. Riots, marches, and many more public gatherings were held. Many of these protests paid off, because in 1972, Title IX was passed, which “guaranteed the right to education free from sex discrimination” (ACLU). Ever since, more and more advances have been made for gender equality.
Today, around 9 million college students in the United States are female, and in fall 2020, female students made up 61 percent of total post-degree enrollment. But there is still so much more we can do! MiniMUN’s SDG curriculum can help with educating younger generations on this topic, and allow others to learn more about it themselves. Request it here!
